Wildlife Rehabilitation - Our Goal

Roanoke Wildlife Rescue is a non-profit, tax exempt organization licensed by the Department of Game & Inland Fisheries [State Level]. The state permit applies to mammals only.

Through this permitting process, we are able to provide treatment and care for injured, orphaned, diseased and displaced wild mammals, as well as the subsequent release of healthy viable animals into appropriate habitats.

Our agency has been providing service to the Roanoke Valley and Southwestern Virginia since 1988. We have Just recently become a "mammals only" center and provide specialized caging and care for what is now classified as Rabies Vectors, i.e., raccoons, foxes, skunks, opossums, and groundhogs. WE DO NOT ACCEPT BATS! We also provide care for all other wild mammals found in this area as well as turtles, snakes, frogs, etc.

Animals admitted to our Center are accepted at no charge to the rescuer; however, donations are greatly appreciated as we do not get any outside funding from the state for the service that we provide. We recognize the need for Grants and Corporate Sponsors and are currently seeking knowledgeable qualified people to help us achieve these goals.

We have just recently achieved our Veterinary License for Wildlife Only and have several veterinarians who have offered their services to our facility on an "on call" basis. The ability to provide all medical treatment for the animals requiring veterinary intervention on site will reduce the stress the animal must endure through additional transporting for medical procedures that could not be performed here in the past. We believe that this upgrade to our facility will increase the number of animals saved, since stress is the number one cause of death in wildlife.

Roanoke Wildlife Rescue coordinates its efforts with the Roanoke Valley SPCA, the Salem Animal Shelter, local animal control agencies, game wardens in all surrounding counties, the Martinsville SPCA, the Danville Humane Society, local veterinarians, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Virginia Tech, as well as the general public.

Our staff consists of licensed rehabilitators, volunteers, an agency veterinarian, and a web master. We are always looking for volunteer staff to assist with animal care. Positions currently available which do not involve working with the animals include: front desk reception assistant, newsletter editor and staff, fund raising and marketing. All positions in this agency are performed on a volunteer basis. There are no salaries involved.
